After 31 years of squatting, the owner of Blokes Fantasma has taken legal action to evict us. He wants to destroy a community life project that was started by the young, working-class people of Nou Barris and La Trini, and which since 1993 has been home to around a hundred people and countless social initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From the beginning, Blokes was politically committed to being more than just a house. It aimed to build an open space where counterculture could be created and shared: workshops, talks, rehearsal rooms, activities supporting political projects, concerts, and performances\u2026 always outside the logic of commodified time and leisure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Blokes building was constructed nearly 40 years ago. The owner\u2014part of a family of major property holders in this city\u2014abandoned it before finishing construction, after causing multiple problems for the neighborhood and failing to pay the workers. After his death, his children did not claim the inheritance\u2014until now, when the liabilities attached to it have expired. Despite this long wait, it has clearly not been a problem for them. In short, they are not lacking money; they are nothing more than crude speculators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the many reasons to defend Blokes Fantasma is that the project is part of a broader struggle to achieve a different model of life. In this struggle, there are many of us, from different places but with a shared goal: to build a world beyond oppression and material accumulation. A world that firmly defends the right to housing over private property. Access to housing has become the slavery of the 21st century and is essential to maintaining capitalism. How many people would leave their shitty jobs if they didn\u2019t have to pay rent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For us, just as the land belongs to those who work it, homes belong to those who live in them. In other words, we want for everyone what we want for ourselves: everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We refuse to be complicit in the commodification of housing, and in this struggle, our tool is squatting. We don\u2019t believe only in defending Blokes\u2014we want homes for everyone, with space for many forms of living together. Homes for those without legal status, for students, for workers, for the unemployed, for caregivers, and for those who dedicate their time to struggle without expecting anything in return. We don\u2019t want anyone to be able to speculate on housing. Above all, we refuse to leave anyone behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And we won\u2019t settle for just this. We want your palaces to turn them into homes, schools, and hospitals. Your yachts to prevent more deaths in the Mediterranean, and your private jets to dismantle them. Your hotels to house those in need, and your luxury stores to transform them into workshops. Your golf courses to grow food. Your second and third homes demolished and the land returned to nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We want to end the plundering of natural resources that this model of a city dependent on mass tourism entails. We want to stop catering to the whims of the rich. We want resources to be distributed according to need, and contributions made according to ability. We want your wealth and luxury at the feet of the people. We want to ensure that no one can accumulate wealth, so that poverty can be abolished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We want Blokes Fantasma for everyone. We want these Blokes\u2014and all those yet to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
