In recent months, we have witnessed a full-frontal, uncompromising attack launched by the PSC (Socialist Party of Catalonia): they want to dismantle each and every form of resistance within the grass-roots, cooperative, and organizational movement. As a loyal party obedient to the orders of capital, the strings the PSC pulls are the ones causing the mass displacement of anyone who doesn’t fit into their showroom-version of Barcelona\u2014the greenwashed environmentalist Barcelona, the Barcelona of (so-called) leftists who look to the upper echelons of society for validation while ignoring the problems those same elites create. A left that plays along with the rich, with power, with the well-off society, trying to force-feed us their so-called social policies\u2014policies without any real or practical substance, policies incapable of solving the very problems they themselves generate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their actions are framed by policing and authoritarian imposition, leaving no room for genuine dialogue and always accompanied by blatant lies, falsified data, and promises of a future built on empty words and sweet talk\u2014promises they\u2019ll inevitably break to serve the interests of capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You don\u2019t fool us; you will never make us believe in you. We won\u2019t fall into your trap. We will keep fighting to expose you, though your actions already speak for themselves. Your lies give you away. And we have more than enough reasons to keep resisting together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Take, for example, the position held by Joan Clos until this past January and who has now replaced him: Helena Beunza. The presidency of the Association of Rental Housing Owners<\/em> (ASVAL) speaks volumes about the person who holds it. ASVAL is the champion of the interests of big real estate companies, large landlords, and the most predatory speculative policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n PSC policies create displacement, gentrification, fear, and are based on aporophobic and xenophobic ideas. Projects like the Olympic Games, the Forum of Cultures, Diagonal Mar, or the 22@ plan have destroyed entire neighborhoods, pushing residents to the social margins of their own communities or to the city outskirts\u2014expelling us and welcoming in predatory investment funds and an economic monoculture that erases the city\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Many of these projects were conceived under Francoist policies and have ended up shaping a city built on outdated initiatives (such as Vallcarca\u2019s \u2018green\u2019 Rambla or the Tres Turons plan), all still focused on removing residents and building for speculation, regardless of the devastating social and ecological consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The PSC uses public infrastructure to benefit private interests and to keep generating profit for the elites. As Manuel Delgado puts it, the PSC practices corporate welfare. The PSC makes deals with elites\u2014regardless of where they\u2019re from\u2014in order to keep selling Barcelona at bargain prices. The PSC seeks to dazzle with appearances, to paralyze us like deer caught in headlights, so that fear and shock render us passive while they loot public funds, pillage the land, increase the number of cruise terminals, and expand the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Evicted children, expelled neighbors, closed small businesses, tourist overcrowding, outrageous rent prices, a crumbling public housing sector, a city for expats, a Barcelona turned into a Risk board game for the elites… This is the result of years of PSC governments in Barcelona. But we continue to resist and fight because we have more than enough reasons, motivations, and will. From Blokes, from Vallcarca, from La Salut, from Gr\u00e0cia, we join forces with the rest of the resilient neighborhoods fighting to topple the PSC and its reactionary policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BARCELONA IS OURS, THE STREETS ARE OURS.
